Are You Too Old For A Tattoo

What do Jennifer Aniston and Susan Sarandon have in common?  They are over 40 and have recently had tattoos done.  Susan Sarandon, who is 65, has only recently had the initials of her children inscribed and Jennifer Aniston, who is 43, also only recently had a tattoo done in memory of her deceased pet.

So how old is too old to get a tatt?

This link to an article covers a grandma who got her first tattoo at 99 and at 101 has been back for more tattoos.  Age?  Pfft!

There has been a growing trend over recent years of older woman getting tattoos.  These tattoos are not the large dark ink tribal patterns you see going down an arm or a huge dragon that covers your back.  While it could be argued that tattoos in the past may have been seen as a form of rebellion or represent membership of a gang, that doesn’t have to be the reason.  Instead, tattoos can be simple featuring small designs such as a butterfly or angel.  Often they are done in memory of a loved one or maybe a date celebrating the birth of a child, the passing of a parent or commemorating a significant event.

You are never too old to get a tattoo but this is obviously a personal decision as is the design and reason for it.

What do you think?  Would you get a tattoo?

40 Is The New Young

It used to be considered ‘middle aged’ and ‘over the hill’ but it seems that 40 is the new young, with celebrities and the normal amongst us celebrating with parties, trips to exotic locations – child free of course – and nights out with the girls at this new ‘coming of age’.

Unlike the previous generation, many of whom had been worn down by dealing with temperamental teens by the time they hit their 40s, the current “Naughty Forties” are juggling jobs and preschoolers, and are focussed more on their own health and wellbeing.

They are fitter and healthier than previous generations, and have a lot more options open to them…coupled with less guilt about enjoying life.  In fact, enjoying life is more a necessity than a social expectation.

Having the unique opportunity to have choice, fought for them by our previous generations’ women and mothers, and the ability to learn from the experiences of those generations, women in their forties have more knowledge, more understanding and a stronger sense of self than any decade previously.

Not only are they more aware of the necessity of looking after themselves financially and mentally, they are also more open to getting out and just being a bit silly, with no judgement from themselves and others.

They know full well that a bit of fun and silliness from time to time does wonders not only for their wellbeing but also for their age.

Perhaps it’s having younger kids at this age that keeps them active and participating in run around and imaginative play.

Or maybe it’s just that they are more in tune with what they like, what makes them laugh and what makes them feel good…and they’re not afraid to show it.

Beauty Over The Years

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the beholder has changed over the years.

Throughout the ages the idea of beauty has changed from being plump and curvy to straight shaped and then to wafer thin.  The images of models can present powerful messages through the way they can be used to sell to being deadly due to the influences on self-image that place social pressure on women to conform.

So how has the idea of beauty changed over the years?

The great artist from the 1600’s, Peter Paul Rubens, was famous for painting plump full figured women which gave rise to the term “Rubenesque”.  These women had thick thighs, round stomachs and modest breasts.

In the 1920’s the women’s rights movement was gathering momentum and it was out with the shapely bodies and in with the boyish figures with straight waists.  Short bob haircuts were popular and women often bounded their breasts to convey a “washboard profile”.

Around the baby boomer era of the 1950’s and 1960’s, Marilyn Monroe was what women wanted to look like with the curvy hourly glass shape.  Sophia Loren also had the curvaceous and voluptuous full figure that women aspired to and men adored.

Today fashion favours the thin and high fashion favours the anorexic look.

In recent times there has been strong debate about the wafer thin models and the influence they have on young woman who believe they must achieve a similar appearance.   In many cases this distorted perception results in a range of eating disorders being developed such as anorexia or bulimia.

This debate has intensified due to the deaths of the Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston in 2006 and the French model Isabelle Caro in 2010 of anorexia.   It has also been suggested that if the fashion industry continues to not address the issue then the government may need to intervene.

Why do we battle to follow the image of beauty that is set for us by someone somewhere who probably doesn’t have to have that look at all?

Perhaps the best definition of beauty as was articulated by Socrates who said: “Things that are pure within themselves evoke pleasure, thus beauty”.

The Fake Image Of Cosmetic Surgery

You’ve hit 40 and your life is about to begin.  Right?  Isn’t that what everyone tells you – “life begins at 40”?

Apparently this is due to cosmetic surgery, with 20% of women aged between 40 and 65 years stating if money were no object, absolutely they’d have a facelift.  One quarter said they’d have their eyelids done, and almost a third said they’d dabble with a bit of Botox to deal with fine lines and wrinkles on the face.

Many would like this surgery of one kind or another to “look younger” and “feel more confident”.  Some say they are doing it to enhance their chances of employment, and looking younger will help.

But will cosmetic surgery really give you more confidence?

Cosmetic surgery is a superficial procedure, working only on those areas that can be seen by others; your face, arms, legs and tummy for example.  What cosmetic surgery can’t do is change your personality, the traits, quirks and qualities that make you you.

If you’re lacking confidence already, it’s not going to have a profound effect.  Sure, you may feel more comfortable and willing to turn up at certain events “wrinkle free”, but if you’re naturally an introvert, it’s not going to provide you with the tools or skills to openly walk up to people and start telling jokes.

If you’re a perfectionist, some plumped up lips aren’t going to stop you being nit-picky.  In fact, if this is your dominant trait, it is most likely to cause you to scrutinise your lips further and cause stress.  (And a few extra frown lines that you’ll now need to see to!)

The altered image you present to the world may make you look like the person you want to be, however the person you’re now presenting to the world is not necessarily you.  As a result, they may very well expect something you just can’t give.

Are they getting you?  Or the fake?

Caring For Your Nails

Hands say a lot about a person and those women with broken or uncared for nails often feel a little uncomfortable when they have to shake hands with someone.  In fact, it is the long elegant fingernails that most women want but, unfortunately, some of us struggle to get.

We understand how hard it can be to keep your nails looking good so we stock tools and treatments for women to grow their nails in a strong and healthy way.

Nail Tek is a range of products that will deal with soft or peeling nails, brittle or ridged nails and fungal infections of the cuticle.  There are fillers to make the ridges less noticeable, quick drying top coats for nail polish to speed up the whole process and conditioners that will feed the nails to make them strong and sleek.  We also carry a starter kit which contains Nail Tek Formulation II and Renew.  You can get the two products for a little more than the price of one so it is an affordable way to start caring for your nails.

There is an old saying about ‘putting your best foot forward’ but on this point we must disagree.  It is really a case of putting your best hand forward so that people can see neat and well cared for hands which promote the professional appearance that we all strive for.

Esteem for Teens

Many of you will have teenage children and some of them will have problem skin.  We have just the product to help them treat their skin condition as they learn about skin care.  It’s called Esteem for Teens  and it was reviewed in Cherry Mag.

“We tested it on a 15 year old male. Well, what can I say?

“This stuff looks weird.”

“That is because it has natural clay in it and that helps draw out all the yuck that might be lurking in your pores.”

“Paws? I don’t have paws.”

“Pores, not paws. Pores are in your skin and that is where dirt, oil and grime can get stuck and block your skin from breathing and cleaning itself.”

“Doesn’t smell too bad. Not even girly.”

“No, the essential oils in it are good for your skin but they don’t smell flowery at all. Will you try it?”

“Yes, it doesn’t look too hard.”

I can report that the said male teen actually used the system day and night for the whole month of the trial. He reports that his skin is soft and feels good and that his acne has cleared a lot. Surprisingly, he asked for more. His mother tells me that she nearly spilt her coffee in shock.

So, Esteem for Teens passes the test of the average male teenager with flying colours. Just think what a difference a clear skin will make to his confidence.”

So, that was the result.  If your child has problem skin, try Esteem for Teens.  It’s natural and it works.

Inner Beauty

At Source of Beauty we carry a range of products to make you look and feel your best.  We know that your confidence soars when you look great.  But did you know that true beauty comes from within?

You’ve probably heard that saying before but we’d like you to think about what it means.

Your physical appearance is a reflection of the person you are.  It is the sum total of your personality, your generosity of spirit, your happiness, your sense of humour and your attitude to life.  It’s the smile on your face and the twinkle in your eye.

Have you ever looked at someone and just known, despite how well groomed they were, that they weren’t happy or they’d had a hard life?  It shows on the outside.

We don’t want you to buy our products and hope for the best.  We want you to take an active part in becoming beautiful by tuning into your own inner beauty.

  • Take care of your health.  Go for regular check-ups, watch your diet and care for your skin.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Eat well.
  • Take time to meditate or at least to sit quietly and daydream.
  • Get involved in your local community or a charity.
  • Make time for family and friends.
  • Laugh and smile!

These actions all sound obvious but that’s probably why we overlook them.  They are an essential part of being happy and your sparkling inner beauty.

Care for yourself from the inside and we’ll help you polish the outside.

Staying Gorgeous Over Christmas

When it comes to the silly season full of parties, presents and general overindulgences, it’s easy to forget about finding the time to take care of you.  When standard routine and spare time seems to go out the window, keep yourself feeling and looking your best by taking the time to look after you.

Downtime

Sleep is our body’s time for repair and restoration so it’s a key weapon in encouraging cell renewal and preventing premature aging.  Over Christmas your sleeping routine can be really affected as you’re tempted to stay up later and not always with the chance of sleeping in longer.  Try to get some consistency around this so your body gets the downtime it needs.

Water

Remembering your H2O at a time when schedules are thrown out or we are more dehydrated than normal will really help you keep your health and beauty in check from the inside out.  Summer and airconditioning can be very drying to our skin too, so a hydrating spray like Franc Balancing Mist can support your skin in staying fresh and supple.

Sun

We’ve all been warned about the consequences from overexposure to sun from fine lines to age spots and premature aging.  Use a good quality sunscreen that is going to block out the rays as well as keep your skin moisturised and hydrated.  To give tired skin some extra TLC, try a rejuvenating formula like Franc Serum – it’ll promote cell renewal, accelerate repair and provide extra protection against aging.  Win win win!

Hair

They say beauty is skin deep but what about your hair?  Your locks really feel the effects for over exposure and over indulgence so try a nourishing treatment and protective agent which will keep you looking picture perfect from the head down.

The Christmas period is called the silly season for a reason – but that’s no excuse to be silly when it comes to your body.  Stay looking your gorgeous self by keeping hydrated (inside and out), sticking to a good sleep and beauty regime and making sure you find enough time just for you.
